Working Health Services Scotland provides free, confidential return to work support across Scotland, for people working in small to medium enterprises who may be absent or at risk of absence from work.
To help support people who become ill to return to work as quickly as possible, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has reformed the Medical Statement (the ‘sick note’) now known as the 'fit note'
The fit note reflects recent medical evidence that shows work can be beneficial for health and wellbeing. Under the new fit note system, GPs will be able to advise if a patient “may be fit for work” and will offer advice on the effects of their health condition. Doctors will also have the option to suggest that their patient would be able to work, subject to the employer’s agreement, if temporary changes such as reduced working hours or amended duties could be accommodated.
A Case Manager will complete a comprehensive assessment; develop an action plan and co-ordinate treatment. The assessment includes a range of pre programme measures that are repeated mid programme and/or on completion to evidence the client's progress. The programme provides quick access to the following services where appropriate:
- Physiotherapy
- Counselling
- Occupational Health Physician
- Occupational Therapy
They may also provide signposting to services for help and advice on issues such as employment, housing and debt. All treatments and interventions are arranged in local community venues whenever possible.
To be eligible for this service, the clients' employer must have less than 250 employees in the organisation and have no access to an occupational health service.

- Health Professionals
- Partner Organisations
- Clients can self refer

Working Health Services Scotland provides employees with access to several free, confidential services and aims to refer to services quickly thus helping to prevent further deterioration of health problems. The Case Manager liaises with GP’s and other relevant professionals to ensure effective outcomes.
